The Shadow Before the Ring
Chapter 8 - The First Light of Sunday
Sunday morning sunlight washed through the kitchen windows, turning the white marble countertops bright and clean.
There was no tension in the air.
No hurried lies.
No hidden lenses watching from bookshelves.
Ethan poured two glasses of fresh orange juice while Lily sat at the counter, humming a quiet tune to her stuffed rabbit.
The doorbell rang softly.
Ethan opened it to find a simple, unmarked delivery box resting on the welcome mat.
Inside was a single handwritten note on heavy cardstock, bearing no return address—only a neat line of familiar handwriting from a man two states away:
To new beginnings. —V.
Ethan smiled faintly, slipping the note into his pocket before turning back to the kitchen.
He picked up his glass, touched it gently against Lily’s juice cup, and listened to the bright, unburdened sound of his daughter laughing for the first time in months.
The storm had passed, leaving behind a home that finally belonged to them alone."
