The Shadow Before the Ring
Chapter 5 - The Legal Wall
By Wednesday afternoon, the case hit its first major bureaucratic barrier.
District Attorney’s office liaisons informed Detective Cole that while the hidden cameras and psychological intimidation were prosecutable, proving intent to cause severe bodily harm or premeditated endangerment under current state statutes carried complex evidentiary hurdles.
“Her defense counsel is already arguing that the laundry room isolation was standard disciplinary practice within domestic bounds,” Cole told Ethan in the hallway outside the arraignment court. “They’re trying to frame her as an overstressed stepmother dealing with a difficult child.”
Ethan’s jaw tightened.
“She planted cameras in my office and my daughter’s bedroom months before we were even engaged.”
“That gets us wiretapping and stalking charges,” Cole nodded. “Which is enough to keep her behind bars without bail pending trial. But her father’s legal team is moving fast to seal the corporate records.”
“Not if I have anything to say about it,” a familiar, gravelly voice echoed down the hallway.
Vincent Moretti stepped out of the private elevator, accompanied by two stern-looking legal associates carrying leather briefcases.
Ethan blinked in surprise.
“Vincent? What are you doing here?”
Vincent adjusted his dark wool coat, his eyes cold and sharp as glass.
“My network in Chicago shares intelligence with local investigators,” Vincent said quietly. “And Julian Hale happens to be a direct competitor in several regional logistics contracts. My people just unlocked a series of encrypted backups from Hale Enterprises servers.”
He handed a slim encrypted drive to Detective Cole.
“Everything you need to prove premeditated financial and domestic extortion is right there.”
