The Marine's Retribution
Chapter 1 - The Silver Pendant
The cold marble of the master bedroom floor bit through the thin fabric of Eleanor’s dress, but she felt none of it. Her mind was a sharp, clear pane of glass. Grant stood over her, his tailored suit immaculate, his $80,000 timepiece glinting in the recessed lighting as he adjusted his cuff. The ninety-ninth strike of his leather belt had left a burning welt across her forearm, but the physical pain was nothing compared to the cold, calculated fury freezing over her heart. “You should be grateful I married someone like you,” Grant sneered, tossing the belt onto the cashmere rug like discarded trash. “Without my money, you're nothing. And that baby won't change a damn thing.”
In the doorway, Patricia Whitmore sipped her morning espresso from a porcelain cup, her cream-colored designer suit immaculate and her expression entirely devoid of human empathy. “The guesthouse might be appropriate until the divorce is finalized,” Patricia remarked casually, as if discussing the relocation of faulty lawn furniture. Grant laughed, a sharp, barking sound. “No. She can stay wherever her retired Marine father can afford to put her.” Eleanor slowly raised her eyes. The silence that followed irritated Grant far more than tears or screaming ever could. “Are you finished?” she asked, her voice steady and quiet.
“What did you say?” Grant snapped, stepping closer. “I asked if you're finished.” She did not cower. Instead, Eleanor carefully pushed herself up, one hand instinctively sheltering her unborn child, and walked past them toward the grand staircase. Neither Grant nor Patricia noticed the tiny silver pendant resting against her collarbone. They didn't know that her late mother, Margaret, had engineered the clasp with a hidden micro-SD slot before she died. They didn't know that Eleanor had recorded every threat, every financial extortion, and every hidden transaction on the Whitmore family network over the past four years. And they had no idea that the retired Marine father they had just insulted was already driving toward the estate with a trunk full of federal subpoenas and a platoon of military attorneys.
