The Foundation of Deception
Chapter 1 - The Broken Trust
Rachel’s thumb hovered over her phone screen, her knuckles whitening as she stared down at the kitchen counter.
""I saw him, Mom,"" Rachel whispered, her voice cracking as she pulled up a series of saved text messages and a photograph taken three months earlier at a downtown restaurant. ""I was downtown with college friends, and I saw Dad walking out of a luxury condominium building with... with a woman who wasn't you.""
I looked down at the photograph.
It showed Mark laughing, his arm draped comfortably around a stylish woman in her early thirties whose name tag from a local design firm read Valeria.
""He saw me,"" Rachel continued, tears welling in her eyes. ""He pulled me aside and told me that if I ever said anything to ruin our family, he would cut off my tuition payments and make sure your life became a living hell. I was terrified, Mom. I didn't know how to protect you.""
I reached across the table, pulling my eldest daughter into a tight embrace as seven-month-old Leo stirred softly against my chest.
""You did the right thing telling me now, sweetheart,"" I said, my voice steady despite the fury burning inside my chest. ""Your father thinks I am helpless. He thinks thirty-one years of raising this family means I don't know how to protect my children.""
Rachel wiped a tear from her cheek, looking down at the Excel spreadsheet glowing on my laptop screen.
""What are those payments to Cima Management Services?"" she asked.
""That,"" I said quietly, ""is the down payment and monthly maintenance for Valeria's condominium—funded entirely from our joint family savings.""
