The Foundation of Deception
Chapter 4 - The Legal Retainer
The office of Vance & Sterling Legal Counsel in downtown Houston was sleek, modern, and intimidatingly quiet.
Marcus Vance, senior partner in family law and complex asset litigation, sat behind a glass desk reviewing the documents Rachel, Daniel, and I had brought with us.
He adjusted his reading glasses, looking up at me with profound professional respect.
""Mrs. Mercer, these financial records and property deeds present a very clear picture,"" Marcus said, tapping his pen against the desk. ""Your husband has engaged in systemic dissipation of marital assets, fraudulent concealment of real estate holdings, and breach of fiduciary duty.""
""What about our home in Sugar Land?"" I asked, resting my hand on the leather portfolio containing my father's inheritance agreement. ""He believes it’s entirely marital property.""
Marcus examined the yellowed, notarized contract from eighteen years ago, letting out an approving whistle.
""This is ironclad,"" Marcus said. ""Your sixty-five percent separate ownership interest is fully protected by your inheritance deed. Furthermore, because he used joint marital funds—and potentially corporate slush funds—to finance a secondary residence with a third party, we can petition the court for an immediate asset freeze and an unequal distribution of remaining marital property in your favor.""
""I don't want to ruin his career,"" I said quietly. ""I just want absolute security for my children and myself.""
""Protecting your children isn't ruining his career, Mrs. Mercer,"" Marcus replied firmly. ""It's holding him accountable for the choices he made.""
