The Foundation of Deception
Chapter 5 - The Confrontation at the Door
Two days later, Mark returned from his Dallas trip, stepping through the front door of our Sugar Land home carrying his leather garment bag.
It was 7:00 PM on a Thursday.
I was sitting at the dining room table with my laptop open, reviewing the final draft of the emergency asset freeze petition Marcus had prepared for court filing the following morning.
Mark dropped his keys on the entryway counter, loosening his tie as he walked into the kitchen.
""Adriana, where’s dinner? I had a brutal set of meetings with the regional directors,"" Mark sighed, walking over to the refrigerator and pulling out a bottle of water.
I didn't look up from my laptop.
""There's brisket in the oven, Mark. You can serve yourself.""
Mark stopped, frowning at my tone. He walked over to the dining table, looking down at the papers spread across the polished wood.
""What is all this?"" he asked, his voice dropping into that condescending, dismissive register I had endured for years. ""Are you playing accountant again? You know you'll just get confused by the numbers.""
I closed my laptop slowly, stood up from my chair, and looked him directly in the eye.
""I'm not confused at all, Mark,"" I said calmly. ""I know about Cima Management Services. I know about the condominium at The Grandview. And I know about Valeria.""
Mark’s face went entirely white.
The water bottle slipped from his fingers, hitting the hardwood floor with a dull thud, splashing water across his polished shoes.
