The Foundation of Deception
Chapter 6 - The Unraveling Control
For five seconds, Mark stood paralyzed, his mouth opening and closing as he tried to find a lie fast enough to cover the chasm that had just opened beneath his feet.
""Who... who told you that?"" Mark stammered, his polished corporate confidence evaporating in an instant. ""That's... that's a business investment! It's a corporate subsidiary holding!""
""The deed lists your name and Valeria R. Morales as joint tenants,"" I said, my voice as steady as granite. ""There is no corporate subsidiary. There is only embezzlement of family assets, tax fraud, and a husband who thought his wife was too brain-dead to read public records.""
Mark’s expression shifted rapidly from shock to blind fury.
""You think you can just look up public records and ruin everything I've built?"" Mark shouted, stepping toward the table. ""I am the Vice President of Sales! I bring in the income! Without me, you and these kids would be living on the street!""
""Without my father's inheritance, Mark, you wouldn't even have the down payment for this house,"" I replied, stepping around the table to face him without flinching. ""And without my thirty-one years of unpaid labor raising eleven children while you climbed the corporate ladder, you wouldn't have had the freedom to build your career.""
Before Mark could answer, the dining room doors swung open.
Daniel, Rachel, and four of our younger children stood in the hallway, their faces hard and unyielding as they looked at their father.
""We heard everything, Dad,"" Daniel said, his voice deep and steady. ""It's over.""
