The Foundation of Deception
Chapter 3 - The Family Council
By Sunday evening, after Mark had left for a three-day business trip to Dallas, I gathered our adult and older teenage children in the living room.
Daniel, now twenty-two and working as an engineering analyst, sat on the sofa with his younger sisters looking on with worried expressions.
I laid the financial summaries, the condominium deed, and my father's property agreement across the coffee table.
""I know your father has always projected an image of absolute control over our family's security,"" I began, my voice calm and unwavering as I looked into the eyes of the children I had raised and protected for three decades. ""But I need you to know the truth about what is happening.""
Rachel stood beside me, explaining the photographs and the hidden financial transfers.
For a long moment, the room was utterly silent.
Then Daniel stood up, his face flushing with anger as he picked up the condominium deed.
""He's been stealing from us,"" Daniel said, his voice shaking. ""While he lectured us about saving money and budgeting for college, he was buying an apartment for another woman.""
""He told me I couldn't survive without him,"" I said softly. ""He believes that because I stayed home to raise you all, I have no legal standing, no financial awareness, and nowhere to go.""
Our fourteen-year-old son, Lucas, stepped forward, placing his hand gently on my shoulder.
""You raised eleven kids, Mom,"" Lucas said fiercely. ""If you can manage our house, you can manage anything. What do you want us to do?""
