The Mafia Boss Came Home in a Blind Rage, But a Four-Year-Old's Paper Star Uncovered a Lethal Plot Inside His Gates

Chapter 1 - The Cold Fireplace

Nora kept her back straight, her hands clasped lightly over the apron tie at her waist.

She did not sit.

In this house, sitting down with Salvatore Marchetti’s son was an invitation to be measured, weighed, and cataloged.

“I asked you to sit, Nora,” Lucian repeated, his voice low, gravelly, but lacking the thunder that usually cracked through the halls.

“With respect, Mr. Marchetti,” Nora said, keeping her tone completely neutral.

“Staff does not sit in the formal parlors during duty hours.”

Mia, entirely oblivious to the tension humming in the air, pulled a jagged yellow star from her small cardboard box.

“Yellow is for morning,” the child stated matter-of-factly, laying it flat against the arm of the velvet sofa.

Lucian looked at the yellow star, then down at the crumpled blue one still resting in his calloused right palm.

His hand had stopped shaking.

The white fury that had blinded him on the highway from Boston had receded into a cold, precise focus.

“You taught her to say that,” Lucian said, his eyes flicking back up to Nora.

“About hands being for holding things, not for anger.”

Nora didn't flinch.

“Her father had a violent temper, sir,” Nora answered quietly.

“Before he died in the shipyard collapse three years ago, I spent two years teaching my daughter that fists don't mean strength.”

Lucian’s jaw tightened once, a micro-reaction that vanished before an ordinary eye could register it.

He didn't speak of his own childhood.

He didn't speak of the dining room where his father, Salvatore, used to test his sons' pain tolerance with heavy crystal tumblers.

“The waterfront consortium,” Lucian murmured, his thumb rubbing the bent crease of the blue paper star.

“They pulled out because they claimed our environmental clearance was forged.”

Nora blinked, caught off guard by him sharing business details with a domestic worker.

“Sir, I manage the cleaning schedules,” Nora said, taking half a step toward her daughter.

“I know nothing about zoning permits.”

“I didn't say you did,” Lucian replied.

He stood up from the armchair, towering over the low coffee table.

His shadow fell across the sofa, but Mia didn't shrink away; she simply reached into her crayon box for a green stick of wax.

“The environmental survey was kept in the floor safe of my private study,” Lucian said, his voice dropping into a deadly, rhythmic cadence.

“Only three people had the combination.”

He looked at Nora, his dark eyes stripping away every layer of domestic pretense.

“Victor Sloan. Myself.”

Lucian paused, stepping around the table until he was two feet from Nora.

“And the housekeeper who cleaned behind the mahogany wainscoting every Tuesday morning at dawn.”

Nora’s breath caught in her throat.

Her knuckles bleached white against her apron.

“I have never opened that panel, Mr. Marchetti.”

“The security cameras on the second-floor gallery were looped for fourteen minutes yesterday morning,” Lucian said.

“During the exact window you were assigned to vacuum the study.”

Mia looked up from her crayons, sensing the shift in the room like an animal sensing an incoming storm.

“Mommy?” the child whispered.

Before Nora could form another word, the sitting room door swung open with a muffled thud, and Victor Sloan stepped through the frame, holding a high-security encrypted satellite phone.

His face was gray.

“Lucian,” Victor said, completely ignoring the maid and her daughter.

“The state police just executed an emergency search warrant on our East Boston freight terminal.”
