The Mafia Boss Came Home in a Blind Rage, But a Four-Year-Old's Paper Star Uncovered a Lethal Plot Inside His Gates

Chapter 6 - The Architect of the Fall

Chapter 6 illustration

The private elevator car descended in absolute, suffocating silence.

Lucian stood with his hands resting on the brass handrail, his eyes fixed on the illuminated floor indicator glowing above the doors.

Floor 3.

Floor 2.

Floor 1.

Victor Sloan stood beside him, clutching the printed police manifest as though it were radioactive.

“Read it again, Victor,” Lucian commanded, his voice dropping so low the hum of the elevator motor almost swallowed it.

Victor cleared his throat, his hand trembling as he held the paper up to the light.

“The crane cable failure at Pier 4 on November 12th, 2023,” Victor read, his voice wavering.

“It wasn't metal fatigue.”

“What was it?”

“The rigging team received a deliberate order to overload the gantry crane with four hundred tons of unmanifested iron ore,” Victor said.

“To create a catastrophic insurance total-loss payout for the maritime holding company.”

The elevator hit the ground floor with a soft hydraulic hiss.

The heavy doors slid open onto the private basement parking garage where Lucian’s armored Maybach sat idling.

Lucian didn't step out.

He remained inside the brass box, his eyes burning with a dark, freezing fury.

“Who signed the dispatch order that crushed Nora’s husband, Victor?”

Victor hesitated, his eyes darting toward the cold concrete of the parking garage.

“Victor,” Lucian whispered, a warning more terrifying than a cocked hammer.

“The dispatch order wasn't signed by Paul,” Victor choked out, looking up with genuine terror.

“Paul was just holding the file as blackmail.”

“Who signed it?”

“Your father, Lucian,” Victor whispered.

“Salvatore Marchetti signed the authorization four weeks before he died.”

The air vanished from Lucian’s chest.

The basement smelled of damp concrete, exhaust fumes, and old motor oil.

For eleven years, Lucian had believed he was cleaning up his father’s legacy, legitimizing the empire, separating the family business from petty violence.

Now, the truth stood stripped of all pretense.

His father had murdered an innocent dockworker to collect twenty million dollars in maritime insurance fraud.

And that dockworker’s widow was currently cooking dinner in his kitchen, while his four-year-old daughter folded paper stars on his Persian rugs.

“Does Nora know?” Lucian asked, stepping out onto the cold concrete.

“The state police haven't released the box yet,” Victor said, hurrying behind him.

“Paul’s attorney will try to leak it to the press before the five o’clock news to poison the public against you.”

Lucian reached the rear door of the Maybach.

His driver, Tony, held the door open, looking unusually tense.

“Tony,” Lucian said.

“Boss?”

“Where is Mia?”

Tony swallowed hard, his eyes flicking toward the darkened entrance of the garage ramp.

“Mrs. Calloway picked her up from the estate twenty minutes ago, Mr. Marchetti.”

Lucian froze, his hand locked on the car door handle.

“I told her to wait at the house.”

“A courier arrived with an official judicial release form bearing Judge Vance’s signature,” Tony stammered, pulling a yellow carbon slip from his pocket.

“It instructed Mrs. Calloway to bring the child to the Family Court auxiliary annex on Atlantic Avenue for final biometric clearance.”

Lucian’s heart slammed against his ribs like a sledgehammer.

“Judge Vance vacated the petition with prejudice fifteen minutes ago in my presence!” Lucian roared, his voice bouncing off the concrete pillars with deafening force.

“The auxiliary annex was decommissioned two years ago!” Victor shouted, checking his tablet.

Tony went white as chalk.

“Boss... I thought it was routine paperwork...”

Lucian pulled his private phone from his coat, dialing Nora’s personal number.

It rang once.

Twice.

Three times.

Then the line clicked open.

The audio wasn't filled with crying or screaming.

It was filled with the rhythmic, mechanical hum of an industrial freight elevator and the sound of waves lapping against rotting wood pilings.

“Lucian,” a woman’s voice came over the speaker.

It wasn't Nora.

It was smooth, aristocratic, and completely devoid of warmth.

Lucian’s fingers clenched around the phone until the glass case creaked.

“Vanessa,” Lucian whispered.

Vanessa Moretti—Paul’s elder sister and the chief financial officer of the family’s offshore holding trusts.

“You were so focused on Paul’s clumsy little theater in court today,” Vanessa said, her voice dripping with cruel amusement over the line.

“You forgot who actually inherited our father’s waterfront assets.”

“If you touch that child, Vanessa,” Lucian said, his voice dropping into a register so cold it didn't sound human, “I will tear down every stone your family owns in this country.”

Vanessa laughed—a high, mocking sound that echoed through the empty garage.

“The child is fine, darling. She’s sitting right here, folding a red star for you.”

The sound of small paper rustling came through the speaker, followed by Mia’s quiet voice in the background:

*“Red is for fire, Mommy said.”*

Lucian’s breath locked in his throat.

“What do you want, Vanessa?”

“I want the Salvatore Marchetti archives from the vault under your estate,” Vanessa said, her tone snapping into sharp, lethal business.

“The files that prove the entire family council was complicit in the 2023 harbor collapses.”

She paused, the wind off the Atlantic whistling through the microphone.

“You have forty minutes to bring the files to Pier 4, Lucian.”

“And if I don't?”

“Then Nora Calloway will finally join her husband at the bottom of the bay,” Vanessa said softly.

The call went dead with a sharp, hollow click.
