The Shadow Gate
Chapter 1 - The Weight of Iron
The heavy iron gates of the Moretti estate stood like sentinels against the swirling Milwaukee snow.
Inside the nursery, the air was warm, smelling faintly of lavender and baby formula, but the silence outside felt heavy, waiting.
Aaron stood by the crib with Sophie safely bundled in a thick fleece carrier against her chest.
Her heart hammered against her ribs, echoing the rhythm of a mother making a final, irrevocable choice.
Elena’s warning from months ago rang in her ears: “He confuses possession with love.”
She knew that if Roman discovered she was packing, his security detail would lock down the compound within seconds.
There would be no negotiation, no calm discussion, and no escape.
She had twenty minutes before Elena’s unmarked car reached the perimeter sensors.
Quietly, methodically, Aaron grabbed her emergency bag, shoved her passport and the flash drive containing her financial records into her coat pocket, and took one last look at the room where her daughter had been born.
Then she turned her back on the house that had become a gilded cage.
