The Phoenix in the ER
Chapter 1 - The Weight of Silence
Dr. Mayhew’s mouth opened, but no sound came out.
The emergency department around them had fallen into a breathless hush, every resident and nurse frozen in place as they waited to see how the hierarchy of the hospital would reassert itself.
""Intubate him, Dr. Mayhew,"" Maggie said, her voice cutting through the silence with an authority that left no room for hesitation. ""His larynx is closing. If we wait three more minutes, we lose the airway permanently.""
Mayhew swallowed hard, his ego bruised and bleeding in front of his staff, but the stark reality of Chief Petty Officer Ortiz’s crashing vitals stripped away his remaining arrogance.
He grabbed the laryngoscope, his hands shaking slightly, and stepped up to the head of the stretcher.
""Park, get the ET tube ready,"" Mayhew muttered, his eyes wide as he glanced at Maggie for confirmation.
Maggie nodded once, stepping closer to guide the procedure.
""Blade at the base of the tongue, Doctor. Lift anteriorly,"" she instructed quietly, her tone firm, steady, and entirely devoid of malice.
Mayhew followed her lead, sliding the tube past the swollen vocal cords on the first attempt while Greer secured the tape.
Ortiz’s chest rose and fell with the mechanical ventilator, his oxygen saturation stabilizing at 98%.
