The Phoenix in the ER
Chapter 3 - The Ghost of the Ridge
Captain Ror stood up, walking slowly to the window that looked out over the gray Atlantic horizon.
""Four years ago, a mobile surgical unit was overrun during a night mortar barrage near the border,"" Ror murmured, reciting the details as if reading from a memory he couldn't shake. ""Eleven medics and nurses on site. Four killed in the initial blast. Seven survived because one senior trauma specialist stayed behind under a collapsed roof, manually irrigating white phosphorus wounds while enemy fire kept the extraction choppers grounded for eleven hours.""
Maggie remained silent, her breath catching slightly in her throat as the ghosts of that night pressed in around her.
""They called her Phoenix,"" Ror continued, turning back to face her. ""Official reports said Lieutenant Margaret Talbett died in the collapse alongside her commanding officer. Her service cross was posthumously awarded in absentia.""
""Lieutenant Talbett died in that bunker,"" Maggie said, her voice dropping to a harsh, quiet whisper. ""Maggie Talbett is the nurse who came back with seventeen metal fragments in her leg, a ruined medical license in three states, and an agreement from a sympathetic admiral that she could live out the rest of her days in quiet anonymity if she never picked up a scalpel again.""
Ror stared at her, the professional detachment slipping away to reveal profound respect.
""And today?"" Ror asked softly. ""Today you picked up the scalpel again.""
""Today a boy was burning on a table while a man who cared more about his ego than his patients watched,"" Maggie said, her gray-green eyes finally locking directly onto Ror’s. ""I didn't break my silence for a rank, Captain. I broke it because some things matter more than hiding.""
