The Phoenix in the ER
Chapter 2 - The Inquiry
Twenty minutes later, the trauma bays had been cleared, the hazardous material protocol for the white phosphorus fragments had been completed by the local safety officer, and Captain Ror stood waiting in his glass-walled office.
Maggie walked down the quiet corridor, her faded red backpack slung over one shoulder, the golden bird catching the fluorescent light as she moved.
She knocked once on the open door and stepped inside.
Captain Ror sat behind his heavy oak desk, his fingers steepled beneath his chin as he looked up at her with an expression that was no longer just curious—it was deeply grave.
""You countermanded an attending physician, endangered your own standing, and exposed operational protocols that most nurses in a stateside naval ER have never encountered,"" Ror said, his voice level. ""Care to explain why, Maggie?""
""The patient was dying, Captain,"" Maggie replied simply, keeping her gray-green eyes fixed on a point just above his left shoulder.
""That doesn't explain how a quiet nurse from the outpatient wing knows combat-grade white phosphorus extraction protocols and advanced phosphorus-induced cardiac stabilization,"" Ror countered, leaning forward. ""Cinder One. That’s what Ortiz called you. I’ve read files from joint task force medical units in the Horn of Africa, Maggie. But names like that don't just walk out of the desert and into Cedar Point without a paper trail.""
Maggie slid her right hand into her coat pocket, pressing her fingers against the jagged scar on the back of her hand.
""The paper trail was classified, Captain,"" she said softly.
