The Foundation of Deception
Chapter 2 - The Digital Ledger
The kitchen fell into a tense, focused silence as Rachel and I set to work.
Years of managing a bustling household of eleven children had trained me to organize chaos, and within two hours, we had cross-referenced the seventeen unauthorized wire transfers with property records available through the public county clerk portal.
Cima Management Services LLC was the managing entity for The Grandview at Hermann Park, a high-rise condominium complex in downtown Houston.
More importantly, the property deed filed six months ago listed two joint tenants: Mark Mercer and Valeria R. Morales.
""He bought her a half-million-dollar condo using our marital assets,"" Rachel said, disbelief shadowing her voice as she read the digital deed summary. ""While we were arguing over whether we could afford braces for Ethan and new shoes for the twins.""
I opened a separate browser tab, pulling up my father’s original San Antonio property sale records from eighteen years ago.
The notarized agreement clearly stipulated that sixty-five percent of our Sugar Land home's purchase equity belonged exclusively to my separate estate, protected by my maiden name and my father’s explicit legal provision.
Mark had spent decades telling everyone, including our children, that he built our entire life from his corporate salary.
He had completely forgotten that the foundation of his success rested entirely on my inheritance—and on a signed contract he had never bothered to read closely.
