The Shadow Before the Ring
Chapter 1 - The Echo in the Archive
Detective Cole’s voice dropped barely above a whisper through the phone speaker.
“The other little girl is safe, Mr. Miller. But the address on those memory cards leads to a property registered under an alias in Evanston, dated nearly four years ago.”
Ethan held the phone so tightly his knuckles cracked against the plastic.
“Four years ago?” he repeated, his gaze darting across the room to where Lily was quietly coloring beside her grandmother. “Meredith didn't even live in Illinois four years ago. She was supposedly working in private childcare on the East Coast.”
“That's what her employment records claimed,” Detective Cole replied grimly. “We're pulling tax documents and residential leases right now. The girl in the footage wasn't adopted through an agency. She was the daughter of a man who mysteriously vanished after a bitter custody dispute.”
Ethan felt the oxygen leave his lungs.
He looked at Meredith, currently sitting in the back of a squad car parked at the curb, her face pressed against the glass with a terrifying, unreadable expression.
She hadn't just drifted into his life by chance at that charity gala a year and a half ago.
She had engineered every single encounter.
“I'm bringing Lily to the station for a protective statement,” Ethan said, his voice flat, hollowed out by rage. “And I want every single file you have on Meredith’s background before dark.”
