The Shadow Before the Ring
Chapter 2 - The Ghostly Lease
The downtown precinct smelled of stale coffee, old paper, and damp wool as Ethan sat across from Detective Cole in her cramped, fluorescent-lit office.
A thick manila folder lay open between them, filled with photocopied leases, bank drafts, and grainy photographs.
“She used a maiden name none of us knew,” Detective Cole explained, tapping a pencil against a certified birth certificate. “Meredith Vance. Or rather, Meredith Vance-Hale.”
Ethan stopped breathing.
“Hale?”
“Daughter of industrialist Julian Hale,” Cole said quietly. “Her family has ties to private security firms and offshore holdings. They specialize in quietly acquiring assets—and sometimes, families.”
Ethan’s mind raced back to the day he met Meredith.
The spilled coffee at the art gallery.
The way she instantly knew how much Lily loved raspberry tarts.
The seeming coincidence of them living only three blocks apart.
None of it was accidental.
It was reconnaissance.
“She targeted me because of the trust fund my grandfather left Lily after my wife passed away,” Ethan whispered, the horrifying math of Meredith’s scheme snapping into place. “If anything happened to me, or if Lily was declared emotionally unstable under a malicious stepmother’s care...”
“The estate reverts to a designated legal guardian,” Cole finished for him. “And guess who was listed as contingent guardian on an amendment filed six months before your wedding?”
