The Shadow Before the Ring
Chapter 7 - The Shadows Recede
By Friday evening, the initial wave of media coverage had crested, leaving the Miller household wrapped in a quiet, fragile peace.
Ethan sat on the living room rug, helping Lily rebuild her puzzle while the warm glow of the fireplace cast long shadows across the floorboards.
Bunny sat propped safely against the sofa cushions, washed and brushed.
“Daddy?” Lily asked softly, looking up from a puzzle piece.
“Yes, sweetheart?”
“Is the bad lady coming back?”
Ethan pulled her close, kissing the top of her soft chestnut hair.
“No, sweetheart. Never. Nobody is ever going to hurt you or take your things again.”
“Can we keep Mommy’s picture right here?” she asked, pointing to the mantelpiece where the framed photograph stood bathed in the evening light.
“Right there,” Ethan agreed, his voice thick with emotion. “Front and center.”
His phone buzzed on the coffee table.
A message from Detective Cole: Federal warrants issued for Julian Hale on corporate conspiracy and witness intimidation. Case closed on our end.
Ethan set the phone face down, choosing instead to watch the steady, peaceful rise and fall of his daughter’s shoulders as she placed the final piece of the puzzle into place.
