The Echoes Behind the Door
Chapter 7 - The Final Leverage
The kitchen table at my house was buried beneath three stacks of bank statements, tax returns, and digital printouts that Clara and Liam had spent the afternoon organizing.
Natalie sat at the head of the table, her fingers tracing the signature block on a fraudulent second mortgage document dated six months prior.
""He didn't just lock me in that garage to isolate Maisie,"" Natalie said, her voice hard and cold as steel. ""He did it because he knew I found the notification letter from the bank in his briefcase that morning.""
Liam looked up from his laptop screen, adjusting his glasses.
""If that second mortgage goes into default before the court asset freeze takes full legal effect tomorrow morning, the bank will foreclose on this house and your downtown studio apartment simultaneously,"" Liam warned. ""Owen structured it so that you carry the primary legal liability for the commercial debt default.""
I clenched my fists against the edge of the counter, the anger flaring hot and sharp behind my ribs.
""We need proof that he forged your authorization on those specific loan documents, not just general software access,"" I said, looking toward Clara.
""We have it,"" Clara said softly, holding up a small USB flash drive she had retrieved from Liam's bag. ""When Liam scrubbed Owen's home office server yesterday under the court's emergency discovery order, he found the original keystroke logs showing Owen logging into Natalie's terminal while she was asleep to execute the digital signature.""
Natalie looked at the flash drive, her eyes narrowing with a fierce, quiet resolve.
""He thought he could lock me away, clear the debt, and leave me with nothing,"" Natalie said, standing up from the chair. ""Let's finish this before the sun goes down.""
