The Echoes Behind the Door
Chapter 6 - The Unresolved Ledger
The midday sun beat down warmly on the limestone steps of the municipal courthouse as Natalie, Clara, and I walked out into the fresh air.
Maisie skipped ahead of us, holding a small paper cup of water she had received from the courthouse family advocate, her small sneakers clicking happily against the concrete.
""We won the immediate custody battle,"" Howard said, shaking my hand warmly before heading toward his parked sedan. ""But keep your doors locked tonight. Owen is going to scramble to liquidate whatever personal accounts he has left before the freeze order hits all local institutions.""
Clara folded her arms, watching Howard's car pull away from the curb.
""Howard is right,"" Clara said, turning to Natalie. ""Owen has been siphoning corporate funds through subsidiary accounts for months. The family business audits we ran last week showed similar patterns to what Marcus Vance was trying to pull at my firm.""
Natalie stopped walking, her brow furrowing as she looked between Clara and me.
""What do you mean, corporate funds?"" Natalie asked quietly. ""Owen's construction firm has been struggling for a year. He told me he took out a high-interest commercial loan to keep the payroll afloat.""
I exchanged a heavy look with Clara.
""It wasn't a commercial loan, honey,"" I said gently, stepping closer to my daughter. ""Owen used your digital signature—the one you set up when you partnered with his firm on their bookkeeping software three years ago—to secure shell corporation loans backed by our family's residential property.""
Natalie’s face went entirely pale.
""The mortgage,"" she whispered, her voice barely audible over the passing traffic. ""The house... it's tied to his business debts?""
