The Echoes Behind the Door
Chapter 4 - The Subpoena Strategy
The courtroom gallery was half-empty when Judge Thomas Vance—unrelated to the local family dynasty—settled into his high-backed leather chair and adjusted his reading glasses.
At the defense table, Owen’s newly appointed attorney, a sharp-suited man named Marcus Vance had recommended years ago, adjusted his cuffs with an air of practiced indifference.
Howard stood up smoothly, buttoning his suit jacket as he addressed the bench.
""Your Honor, we move for an immediate dismissal of the emergency custody petition on the grounds of fraudulent misrepresentation and material omission of fact,"" Howard announced, his voice carrying clearly across the quiet room.
Owen’s attorney sprang to his feet instantly.
""Objection, Your Honor! The petitioner is attempting to divert attention from the respondent's verified behavioral instability, as certified by licensed psychological counsel—""
""Save it, Mr. Gable,"" Judge Vance interrupted, his tone dry and unimpressed. He looked down at the documents Howard had just slid across the bench. ""Counsel, these bank transfer logs show twelve thousand dollars diverted from a protected minor's account to fund this exact emergency filing, coinciding precisely with the date of the disputed psychological evaluation.""
Owen shifted uncomfortably in his chair, glancing sideways at his lawyer as the color drained from his face.
""Furthermore,"" Howard continued, stepping forward with a second folder, ""we submit sworn affidavits from the municipal water authority establishing that the garage where my client and her five-year-old daughter were locked had its climate control and secondary exits intentionally bolted from the exterior forty-eight hours prior.""
The judge’s eyebrows arched sharply as he began flipping through the physical evidence logs.
