The Echoes Behind the Door
Chapter 5 - The Turning Tide
Judge Vance tapped a heavy silver pen against the mahogany bench, the sound cutting through the tense silence of the courtroom.
""Mr. Gable,"" the judge said, looking directly at opposing counsel. ""Do you have any documentation to counter these financial transfers and the structural alteration logs submitted by the respondent?""
Owen’s lawyer stammered, flipping rapidly through his empty legal pad before looking back up at the bench.
""Your Honor, we request a forty-eight-hour recess to review these late-filed financial exhibits with our client—""
""Denied,"" Judge Vance said flatly. ""An ex parte emergency custody order granted under false financial pretenses and deliberate physical confinement constitutes an abuse of judicial process.""
Natalie exhaled a long, shaky breath, her hand reaching across the table to squeeze mine as the weight of the past three days began to lift from her shoulders.
""The emergency custody petition is hereby vacated,"" Judge Vance announced, his gavel falling with a crisp, decisive thud. ""Temporary physical and legal custody of the minor child is restored fully to the mother, effective immediately. Furthermore, all joint assets are frozen pending a comprehensive forensic audit.""
Owen bolted upright in his chair, his face contorted with rage as he turned toward his lawyer.
""You can't let her do that! Tell him she's lying!"" Owen shouted, his voice echoing sharply off the wood-paneled walls before two bailiffs stepped forward and placed heavy hands on his shoulders.
""Mr. Vance, one more outburst and you'll be spending the afternoon in holding for contempt,"" Judge Vance warned, gesturing sharply for the bailiffs to remove him from the room.
As Owen was hauled backward through the swinging double doors, he shot one final, venomous glare across the aisle—not at me, but straight at Natalie.
