The Echoes Behind the Door
Chapter 2 - The Emergency Docket
The fluorescent lights of the Oakridge General waiting room hummed with a sterile, relentless intensity that matched the pounding in my temples.
Natalie sat on the edge of the plastic chairs, Maisie curled asleep in her lap beneath a scratchy hospital blanket, her thumb hooked gently in her mouth.
I stood by the window, watching the predawn light begin to bleed over the rain-slicked asphalt of the parking lot while my phone buzzed continuously with notifications from our family attorney, Howard Vance—no relation to Owen, thankfully.
Howard’s voice crackled through the phone line on the third ring.
""Thomas, I woke up the duty magistrate twenty minutes ago,"" Howard said, his tone brisk and professional. ""Owen filed an ex parte emergency custody petition yesterday afternoon claiming Natalie was a flight risk and an unfit mother.""
Clara leaned against the wall beside me, having driven out as soon as I called her from the station.
""What grounds did he use?"" Clara asked, her voice dropping into a sharp, analytical register. ""An ex parte order requires immediate, documented endangerment.""
""He used a forged psychiatric evaluation signed by a local clinic counselor who happens to be his brother-in-law's business partner,"" Howard replied grimly. ""Without physical proof that the evaluation was fraudulent—and concrete financial records showing Owen engineered Natalie's isolation—the magistrate is legally bound to respect the emergency filing until a full evidentiary hearing is called.""
I looked back toward Natalie, realizing with a sick lurch in my stomach that getting them out of the garage was only the first skirmish in a much larger bureaucratic war.
""How long do we have before the judge reviews the emergency order?"" I asked.
""Two hours,"" Howard said. ""Meet me at the municipal courthouse by 7:45 AM sharp, or Maisie stays in temporary state foster custody while the petition is contested.""
