The Echoes Behind the Door
Chapter 1 - The Threshold of Safety
The blue and red strobes of the cruiser painted the peeling siding of Owen’s suburban home in erratic, pulsing flashes.
Officer Miller crouched beside Maisie, his heavy utility belt clicking against the damp grass as he handed the little girl his department-issued emergency blanket.
Natalie stood frozen just outside the shadow of the garage, her bare feet pressing into the wet gravel while her fingers remained locked in the fabric of my coat.
""They're not allowed to take her,"" Natalie whispered again, her voice shaking with a cold adrenaline that seemed to have hollowed her out. ""Owen signed emergency guardianship papers three days ago under a false medical claim, and his sister’s custody lawyer is already lined up in county court.""
Across the yard, another officer was leading Owen toward the back of the second patrol car, his wrists cuffed behind his back, his posture stiff with indignant fury.
""You're making a massive mistake!"" Owen shouted over the hum of the cruiser engine, glaring past the flashing lights straight at me. ""She agreed to a separation agreement! She locked herself in to stage an abduction!""
I tightened my arm around Natalie's shoulders, feeling the raw tremor running through her frame.
""You're safe now,"" I murmured, my eyes fixed on Owen as he was guided into the back seat of the cruiser. ""We're going to the precinct, and we're sorting this out legally from the ground up.""
Officer Miller stood up, shining his flashlight beam downward as he looked between Natalie and me.
""We need to transport both of you to Oakridge General for a standard medical evaluation,"" Miller said gently, jotting something down in his small leather notebook. ""And as for the custody paperwork he mentioned, you'll need every piece of corroborating documentation you have when the family court judge opens chambers at eight o'clock.""
