The Echoes Behind the Door
Chapter 3 - The Financial Pipeline
The cramped consultation room at the municipal courthouse smelled of old law books and stale coffee.
Clara slammed a thick manila folder onto the laminate table, her fingers tapping rhythmically against the cardboard edge.
""Howard is right about the timeline,"" Clara said, looking up at me and Natalie, who had just joined us after Maisie was settled with a hospital social worker. ""If we only fight the custody petition on emotional grounds, the judge will lean on the forged medical evaluation because it bears a licensed counselor's stamp.""
Natalie sat down slowly, her eyes bloodshot but clear.
""Owen didn't pay for that evaluation out of our joint account,"" Natalie said, her voice steadying as her analytical mind kicked in. ""I checked our QuickBooks business ledger last week before he locked my desktop. He moved twelve thousand dollars from our daughter's college fund into a private retainer for a family law firm in the next county.""
I pulled a chair up beside her.
""Can you prove the transfer was unauthorized?""
""I have the automated bank alerts forwarded to my secondary email,"" Natalie said, pulling her phone from her coat pocket. ""The one Owen forgot to scrub before he took my admin keys. Every single transaction timestamped right before he locked us in that garage.""
Clara leaned over the table, her eyes scanning the digital transfer receipts flashing on Natalie's phone screen.
""This isn't just a messy divorce maneuver,"" Clara said, her expression hardening. ""Diverting earmarked child funds to finance a fraudulent custody setup crosses the line from civil dispute into deliberate financial sabotage and perjury.""
