The Ledger of the Forgotten
Chapter 6 - A New Dawn
Two weeks later, the crisp autumn wind swept off Lake Michigan, carrying the sharp scent of change across the city.
Evelyn stood on the private balcony of her newly restored downtown penthouse, wrapped in a soft cashmere blanket, looking down at the bustling streets below.
In the nursery behind her, little Sophie—born healthy and strong despite the trauma of that night—was sleeping peacefully in her crib.
The door behind her clicked open.
Vincent stepped out onto the balcony, holding two cups of hot tea, handing one to her with a quiet, respectful nod.
“The board of directors is waiting downstairs for your opening remarks,” Vincent said gently. “Though I told them they could wait another hour if you needed rest.”
Evelyn took the warm ceramic cup, her fingers tracing the rim.
“Let them wait,” she murmured, a faint, confident smile touching her lips. “For eleven years, I rushed every time someone told me to hurry. I think I’m done running.”
Vincent stood beside her, his gaze following hers out toward the horizon where the sun was breaking through the gray clouds.
“What’s your first official act as CEO?” he asked.
Evelyn looked down at her ringless hand, feeling lighter than she had in her entire life.
“We’re funding the factory workers' medical trusts,” she said firmly. “Every single one of them. With back pay.”
Vincent smiled—a rare, genuine expression that softened the hard lines of his face.
“Arthur Bennett would have been very proud of his daughter.”
Evelyn turned her head, meeting Vincent’s steady gaze, knowing that while the storm had nearly broken her, the shelter she had found in the shadows of the city was stronger than anything Grant Whitmore had ever built."
