The Ledger of the Forgotten
Chapter 2 - The House That Built a Ghost
Three hours earlier, before the rain had turned to sleet, Evelyn had sat in the cramped back booth of a 24-hour diner off Route 9, her fingers trembling as she dialed a private number she had memorized years ago.
She had called a number connected to Vincent Moretti’s private logistics office.
She didn't ask for money.
She didn't ask for protection.
She had simply left a single, encoded string of numbers followed by her father’s name: Arthur Bennett. Vault 412.
Vincent had recognized the name immediately.
Years ago, Arthur Bennett—a humble railroad maintenance worker who had secretly acquired prime industrial real estate parcels across the tri-state area before dying in obscurity—had saved Vincent’s uncle from a federal indictment by preserving a crucial land title ledger.
The Morettis never forgot a debt.
And when Vincent’s private intelligence network flagged that Arthur Bennett’s daughter was being systematically stripped of her assets by a billionaire tech fraudster named Grant Whitmore, Vincent had quietly placed Evelyn on his priority ledger.
Now, as Vincent walked slowly up the marble steps, ignoring Grant’s sputtering protests, he knelt beside Evelyn’s unconscious body.
He pressed two fingers against her wrist.
Her pulse was faint, fluttering dangerously.
Vincent looked up at Grant, his gaze dropping to the swollen curve of Evelyn’s stomach.
“She’s eight months pregnant, Whitmore,” Vincent said softly, his voice dangerously level. “And your physician-certified mistress just watched you throw her down a flight of stone stairs.”
“This is a private matter!” Grant stammered, stepping backward as one of Vincent’s security specialists smoothly blocked the front door. “You’re trespassing on private property. I’ll call the Governor—”
“Your phone is currently being wiped of every communication you’ve had with Vanguard Holdings over the past twelve months,” Vincent interrupted coldly. He gently lifted Evelyn into his arms, his movements surprisingly tender. “And by morning, your entire empire won't just be audited. It will be dismantled.”
