The Ledger of the Forgotten
Chapter 5 - The Awakening
When Evelyn opened her eyes later that afternoon, the harsh hospital lighting had been dimmed to a soft, warm amber.
The rhythmic beeping of the heart monitor was steady.
Sitting in the leather chair beside her bed was a man she had never met before—tall, impeccably dressed, with silver-threaded dark hair and eyes that held the weight of a city.
Evelyn instinctively reached for her stomach, her breath catching in her throat.
“She’s fine,” Vincent said softly, standing up and pouring a small cup of water. “The baby is resting. And so are you.”
Evelyn accepted the water with a trembling hand, her eyes darting around the private suite.
“Where... where is Grant?”
“Grant is currently being introduced to the federal penal system,” Vincent replied evenly. “Along with Ms. Caldwell.”
Evelyn stared at him, the memory of the marble stairs and the blue box rushing back in a dizzying wave.
“Who are you?” she whispered.
“My name is Vincent Moretti,” he said, setting the cup down. “Your father helped my family twenty years ago, Mrs. Whitmore. It was well past time someone returned the favor.”
He slid the blue metal box onto the rolling tray across her bed.
Resting on top of it was a certified corporate portfolio binder bearing a new name plate: Bennett-Moretti Holdings.
“Your husband’s patents, his real estate holdings, and his corporate accounts have been legally transferred to your name,” Vincent said quietly. “You own Whitmore Holdings now. Every single brick, share, and dollar.”
Evelyn looked at the box, then down at the wedding ring she had nearly lost.
For the first time in years, the crushing weight in her chest began to lift.
