The Ledger of the Forgotten
Chapter 4 - The Corporate Guillotine
By Monday morning, the financial markets opened to an earthquake.
BREAKING: WHITMORE HOLDINGS ASSETS FROZEN PENDING FEDERAL FRAUD INVESTIGATION.
The headline flashed across every news terminal in Wall Street and Chicago.
Grant Whitmore sat behind his mahogany desk on the top floor of the Whitmore Tower, screaming into his speakerphone while his chief legal counsel stared blankly at a laptop screen.
“What do you mean the patents aren't ours?!” Grant roared, his face flushed with blind panic. “We filed those registrations three years ago!”
“Mr. Whitmore,” his attorney said, his voice trembling as he slid the legal notice across the desk. “The prior assignment was recorded under an archaic master trust held by an estate executor named Arthur Bennett. The court just recognized the primary lienholder.”
The office door banged open.
Two federal marshals, flanked by two of Vincent Moretti’s private security guards, walked uninvited into the executive suite.
“Grant Whitmore, you are being placed under arrest for mail fraud, corporate asset falsification, and reckless endangerment,” the lead marshal announced, reading the warrant as he snapped steel cuffs around Grant’s wrists.
Vanessa Caldwell, who had been sitting on the leather sofa waiting to discuss their afternoon PR strategy, let out a sharp, hysterical shriek.
“You can’t do this! Do you know who we are?!” Vanessa screamed, lunging toward the door.
“Quiet, Ms. Caldwell,” one of the security guards said flatly, stepping into her path. “Your name is also on the asset seizure warrants as an accessory to corporate embezzlement.”
Grant was dragged backward toward the elevators, his expensive suit rumpled, his face pale with the terrifying realization that his entire fabricated empire had evaporated in less than twenty-four hours.
