The Ledger of Respect
Chapter 6 - The Uninvited Visitor
Three days later, the post-wedding fallout hit the local financial news columns when Sterling Holdings—Charles Bennett’s real estate firm—announced an unexpected liquidity crisis following the withdrawal of several major commercial backers.
I was sitting in my home study reviewing some consulting notes when the front doorbell rang, chiming through the quiet house.
I walked down the hall and pulled open the front door, expecting a delivery driver or a neighbor.
Instead, standing on the porch was Ethan.
He looked terrible. His hair was unwashed, his suit jacket was rumpled, and the arrogant swagger that Camille had always encouraged was completely gone.
“Can I come in, Dad?” Ethan asked quietly, staring down at the welcome mat.
I stood in the doorway for a long moment, weighing the damage of the past week against the instinct of a father.
“Where’s Camille?” I asked.
Ethan swallowed hard, his eyes welling with moisture. “Her father’s lawyers are handling an emergency asset freeze. Camille took her car and went back to her parents' house in the city last night. She told me... she told me she didn't sign up to be married to a nobody.”
A cold pang of pity mixed with bitter vindication rippled through my chest.
“And you came here because you realized she was right, or because you have nowhere else to sleep?” I asked, keeping my voice level.
Ethan looked up, tears finally spilling over his eyelashes. “Because I was a coward, Dad. And I’m so, so sorry.”
