The Ledger of Respect
Chapter 2 - The Scramble for Control
Camille jerked her arm away from her father, her eyes wild with panic as the reality of the empty reception hall began to sink in.
“You can’t just shut this down!” Camille shrieked, her voice losing its polished veneer as she addressed the crowd of guests who were already beginning to whisper behind cupped hands. “This is our wedding! Everyone stay! We are moving to the grand ballroom right now!”
Nobody moved.
The two hundred guests remained rooted to their folding chairs and standing spots along the lawn, watching the spectacle unfold like spectators at a slow-motion train wreck.
Charles Bennett pulled out his phone with trembling fingers, dialing frantically as he tried to salvage the financial disaster unfolding before him.
“Charles, don't bother calling your accountants,” I said, turning my gaze to the man who had spent the last six months treating my family like hired help. “The catering staff has already been instructed to pack up the cold platters, and the band has been paid for their travel time home.”
Charles lowered his phone, his eyes narrowing into cold slits. “You’ll be hearing from my attorneys by Monday morning, Richard. This breach of contract is going to cost you dearly.”
“Sue me for breach of a contract that was never finalized in writing,” I answered evenly. “Or better yet, ask your daughter how many times she laughed when she thought nobody was listening about how easily she could bleed my retirement accounts dry.”
Ethan flinched at that, finally looking down at his polished shoes as if he wished the muddy lawn would swallow him whole.
