The Ledger of Respect
Chapter 4 - The Reckoning at the Gates
By five o'clock, Briarwood Estate was nearly empty of guests, the luxury sedans and rented limousines having trickled away down the winding private drive.
Only Camille’s family remained, huddled near the main entrance arguing in low, venomous whispers while waiting for their luggage to be brought down from the bridal suite.
Helen and I walked out toward our car parked near the gravel turnaround, ignoring the hostile glares shot our way by Charles Bennett and his wife.
As we reached the car, Ethan came running down the stone steps, coatless and desperate.
“Mom, Dad, wait!” Ethan called out, grabbing the passenger door before I could open it. “You can’t just leave us here like this. The hotel rooms are canceled under your corporate account. We have nowhere to stay tonight.”
I looked at my son, feeling a profound, heavy sorrow settle into my bones.
“You are a grown man, Ethan,” I said, my voice steady and unyielding. “You have a college degree, a job in finance, and a wife who thinks money solves every character flaw. Figure it out.”
“I’m your son!” Ethan cried, his voice breaking as a few remaining staff members turned to look.
“You are,” I replied, opening the car door for Helen. “And I hope one day you realize what you traded away for a girl who wouldn't even help your mother up out of the mud.”
We got into the car, the engine turning over with a quiet, smooth hum as I shifted into drive and pulled away down the gravel path, leaving our son standing alone in the fading autumn light.
