Camille’s face flushed a violent, mottled shade of crimson, her perfectly styled curls seeming to bristle with fury as Helen’s calm, mud-streaked voice hung in the air.
“You old fool,” Camille hissed, taking a sharp step forward before her father, Charles, caught her elbow in a tight, warning grip.

Ethan stood frozen between his bride and his parents, looking like a man trapped on a collapsing bridge with no idea which way to jump.
“Dad, please,” Ethan pleaded, his voice cracking slightly as he looked at me. “We can talk about this inside. In private. Not in front of everybody.”

Julia Marsh, the venue manager, stepped forward with a clipboard in hand, her expression professionally cold.
“Mr. Whitaker, I need a word regarding the immediate status of the evening catering staff,” Julia said calmly.
“Of course, Julia,” I replied. “Settle all accounts for the afternoon ceremony and the appetizers already served. The remaining funds are returned to my custody.”
