The Foundation Unravels
Chapter 7 - The Final Inventory
The heavy oak door of the recovery suite closed softly behind the federal agents as they led Daniel away in handcuffs, Nora following close behind in stunned, tearful silence.
The room grew quiet again, the rhythmic chirping of the heart monitor returning to a steady, peaceful cadence.
Marcus Vance stood by the window, tapping a few final keystrokes on his tablet before turning to look at me with a respectful nod.
“The asset freeze is secure, Claire,” Marcus said quietly. “Whitmore Holdings is fully protected, and the corporate audits are already underway. By the time you’re discharged next week, Daniel won't have access to a single dime of company equity.”
“Thank you, Marcus,” I murmured, leaning my head back against the pillow with a profound, bone-deep exhaustion.
“Don't thank me yet,” Marcus replied with a faint, wry smile. “Your mother is currently downstairs trying to file an emergency guardianship petition for Owen, claiming you are medically unfit to manage your personal affairs.”
I let out a dry, humorless laugh.
“Let her try,” I said, staring at the ceiling. “The hospital social worker already has my formal statement revoking any custodial or financial association with my mother or Nora. From this moment on, they are entirely on their own.”
Marcus walked over to the edge of the bed, gently resting the revised corporate deeds on the bedside table.
“Get some rest, Claire,” Marcus advised gently. “You’ve spent your entire life holding everyone else’s world together. It’s time to let the foundation finally support you.”
As Marcus stepped out of the room, I closed my eyes and took my first deep, unhindered breath in years.
