The Foundation Unravels
Chapter 6 - The Unraveling Web
The shattering sound of the ceramic bowl echoing against the linoleum floor seemed to snap Daniel out of his momentary shock.
“This is a conspiracy!” Daniel yelled, his finger shaking as he pointed directly at me. “She fabricated these financial records! She planned this entire thing before the surgery—she used her own liver as a pawn to distract from her corporate sabotage!”
Marcus didn't even blink.
He simply tapped his tablet screen, projecting a secure financial ledger onto the wall-mounted television screen above the hospital bed.
“Mr. Mercer, the transaction logs don't lie,” Marcus said smoothly, his voice carrying the calm authority of a seasoned prosecutor. “Every single wire transfer from the corporate reserves to your offshore accounts in the Caymans bears your private cryptographic digital signature, executed while Claire was in pre-operative quarantine.”
Nora stared at the glowing screen, her eyes widening in horror as she saw the precise dates and amounts—amounts that proved Daniel had been draining the family business not to build a future for them, but to fund a separate life she apparently knew nothing about.
“You... you said the money came from your personal inheritance,” Nora whispered, backing away from Daniel as if he were a stranger. “You told me we were safe.”
Daniel looked frantically between Nora, the investigators, and me, realizing his entire house of cards had completely collapsed in less than twelve hours.
“Claire, please,” Daniel pleaded, his voice suddenly dropping into a desperate, pathetic whine as he took a half-step toward my bed. “We’ve been married for eleven years. Think of Owen—he just had a liver transplant, he needs both of us—don't do this to our family.”
I looked down at the fresh surgical dressing protecting the wound where sixty percent of my liver had been carved out to save that little boy’s life.
“You told me yesterday that Owen isn't even my family,” I said, my voice cutting through the room like cold steel. “And you’re right, Daniel. He isn't.”
The federal investigator stepped forward, placing a heavy hand on Daniel’s shoulder.
“Mr. Mercer, turn around and place your hands behind your back. You are under arrest for federal wire fraud and corporate embezzlement.”
