The Foundation Unravels
Chapter 4 - The Morning Ambush
By 8:30 AM, the morning light was streaming brightly through the recovery suite windows, illuminating the sterile white walls and the silent, blinking monitors.
True to his word, Marcus had dispatched not just an associate, but a private security detail stationed quietly outside my door to enforce the hospital's visitor ban.
I was sitting up slightly against the adjusted pillows, sipping lukewarm broth, when the door swung open without a knock.
It wasn't Marcus’s associate.
It was Daniel, flanked by a strange, aggressive-looking attorney named Mr. Gable, and followed closely by Nora, who looked triumphant.
“Security allowed you past the desk?” I asked calmly, setting the broth bowl down on the tray table.
“Your little hospital quarantine stunt isn't going to work, Claire,” Daniel snapped, striding directly toward the bed with a briefcase tucked under his arm. “Mr. Gable has reviewed the corporate structure of Whitmore Holdings. Even if the trust was formed prior to the wedding, New York matrimonial law entitles me to a fifty percent appreciation stake resulting from marital labor.”
Mr. Gable smiled smoothly, flashing a row of unnaturally white teeth as he flipped open a leather folio.
“Good morning, Ms. Hayes,” Gable said, his voice dripping with condescension. “We have filed an emergency motion in family court to compel the immediate transfer of the penthouse deed and corporate voting rights, citing your current medical inability to manage company affairs.”
I didn't flinch.
I didn't yell.
I simply reached into the drawer of the bedside table, pulled out a thick document embossed with the gold seal of Vance & Sterling Legal Counsel, and laid it flat across my lap.
“You might want to check the date on that family court motion, Mr. Gable,” I said quietly. “Because at 8:14 AM this morning, the federal bankruptcy and corporate fraud division issued a temporary restraining order freezing every personal account, credit card, and corporate subsidiary tied to Daniel Mercer due to suspicious capital diversion.”
Daniel’s smug expression froze instantly.
