The Foundation Unravels
Chapter 3 - The Confidential Call
The digital clock on the bedside table read 4:15 AM when the nurse handed me a sanitized hospital phone with the privacy screen enabled.
My abdomen throbbed with every breath, but the fog of shock had been completely replaced by an icy, calculated fury.
I dialed a ten-digit number from memory—the direct, encrypted line of Marcus Vance, senior partner at Vance & Sterling Legal Counsel and one of the few corporate restructuring attorneys in the state who didn't owe Daniel or my mother a favor.
The line rang twice before a deep, calm voice answered.
“This is Marcus Vance. You're calling outside standard business hours—this better be an emergency.”
“It’s Claire Hayes, Marcus,” I said, my voice steady despite the pain.
There was a brief pause on the other end as Marcus shifted positions, his tone instantly sharpening from professional indifference to acute alertness.
“Claire? I heard you underwent a partial hepatectomy yesterday at Hudson Meridian. Are you calling from the recovery ward?”
“I’m calling because my husband and my sister just attempted to coerce me into signing fraudulent divorce and property surrender documents while I was physically incapacitated post-op,” I said evenly.
Marcus let out a low, sharp whistle through the receiver.
“Coercion of an incapacitated donor post-organ retrieval carries immediate criminal implications, not to mention civil fraud,” Marcus said, the sound of a keyboard clicking echoing faintly in his background. “What assets are they trying to seize?”
“They want the downtown penthouse owned by Whitmore Structural Holdings, along with complete control over my corporate equity accounts,” I replied, staring out the darkened window at the city skyline. “Daniel thinks the company is a marital asset because we were married when it expanded. He doesn't know I kept the foundational holding trust entirely in my maiden name.”
Marcus chuckled darkly on the other end of the line.
“Classic rookie mistake by a man who thinks he's smarter than the architect,” Marcus murmured. “Listen to me, Claire. Do not sign anything. Do not let them back into your room. At 8:00 AM sharp, I am sending my senior associate to your bedside with a formal injunction freezing every single personal and commercial account Daniel touches.”
