The Commander’s Final Briefing
Chapter 7 - The Final Inspection
As evening settled over Port Mercer, I walked out onto the terrace with a cup of hot tea, looking out over the manicured gardens and the twinkling lights of the city below.
The place where Brianna had stood with her champagne flute was empty, swept clean of every trace of their brief, greedy occupation.
A quiet knock sounded at the front door.
I walked down the grand staircase and opened it, expecting local authorities or perhaps another pathetic plea from my father.
Instead, a young courier stood on the porch holding a certified legal envelope bearing the seal of the municipal land registry.
“Delivery for Commander Whitaker,” the courier said politely.
I signed for the envelope, closed the door, and broke the seal in the entryway light.
Inside was a formal deed transfer document, signed by my father’s own hand three weeks prior—the very document he thought gave him the right to hand my home away.
Except, as I read through the fine print he had been too arrogant to check, the clauses he had added actually forfeited all future inheritance and property claims in exchange for a lump-sum payout he had already squandered on bad debts.
He hadn't just stolen my house for Brianna; he had legally signed away every last tie binding him to my estate forever.
