The Architecture of Redemption
Chapter 5 - The Collapse of Authority
The heavy oak doors of the boardroom closed behind the officers as they led Evan away in silent, compliant disgrace, his head bowed low to avoid the gaze of the board members.
The silence that followed was heavy, thick with the realization of how close the foundation had come to absolute institutional ruin.
Dr. Sterling leaned forward, resting his elbows on the polished wood as he looked across the table at Mara.
“Ms. Ellison,” Dr. Sterling said, his voice carrying genuine professional respect. “The foundation owes you an apology. We ignored warning signs because Dr. Mercer projected an image of absolute institutional control.”
“You don't owe me an apology, Dr. Sterling,” Mara replied calmly, closing her leather folder. “You owe the researchers, the patients, and the children whose medical equipment was compromised a fully transparent public audit.”
Marcus Vance slid a secondary document across the table toward her.
“The legal advisory board has already voted unanimously to approve your independent diagnostic clinic as the primary regional partner for Hawthorne’s upcoming pediatric outreach initiative,” Marcus noted with a faint smile. “Assuming, of course, your schedule permits it after the baby arrives.”
Mara looked down at the contract, feeling a profound wave of peace wash over her.
“My schedule will accommodate anything that puts patients before ego, Mr. Vance,” Mara said softly, standing up from the table.
