The Architecture of Redemption
Chapter 4 - The Digital Paper Trail
Dr. Sterling pulled the top financial spreadsheet toward himself, his eyes scanning the precise columns of numbers detailing the diverted research funds.
“Explain these ledger entries, Dr. Mercer,” Dr. Sterling demanded quietly, his gaze lifting to fix directly on Evan. “The endowment funds designated for pediatric cardiology equipment were systematically routed through a shell corporation registered under an inactive Hawthorne procurement code.”
Evan’s mouth opened and closed like a fish out of water, his hands gripping the back of his chair as he realized every single escape route had been systematically blocked.
“It... it was a temporary liquidity reallocation,” Evan stammered, his professional facade completely disintegrating into a panicked sweat. “The board... the board was aware of administrative flexibility—approved by previous oversight!”
“No member of the board ever authorized capital diversion to a private offshore account in the Cayman Islands,” a sharp voice interrupted from the doorway.
Everyone turned to see Detective Sarah Miller stepping into the boardroom, accompanied by two uniformed municipal officers carrying a stack of digital subpoena warrants.
Evan staggered backward, his knees bumping against the heavy conference chair as he looked between the officers and the door.
“Dr. Evan Mercer,” Detective Miller said, her hand resting casually on her holster as she stepped up to the table. “You are under arrest for grand larceny, corporate embezzlement, and falsification of medical research grants.”
