The Architecture of Redemption
Chapter 2 - The Audit Trail
The heavy oak doors of the executive ante-room swallowed Mara as she slipped away from the ballroom noise, the quiet hum of the climate control offering an immediate, welcome reprieve.
She set the leather folder down on a mahogany side table and let out a long, slow breath, pressing her shoulders back against the wall.
The adrenaline rush was beginning to fade, leaving behind a dull ache in her lower back and the rhythmic, insistent kicking of her baby reminding her not to overdo it.
The door clicked open behind her, and Jordan Blake slipped into the room, holding a secure encrypted tablet.
“I saw the exchange with Evan out by the champagne fountain,” Jordan said, a faint, approving smile touching his lips. “You completely dismantled his composure in under two minutes.”
Mara managed a tired, tight-lipped smile, running a hand through her hair.
“He thought I was still the woman who apologized for breathing too loudly in his presence,” Mara murmured, walking over to check her reflection in the gilded wall mirror. “He had no idea I spent the last nine months forensic-auditing every single financial transfer he made while I was still working under his lab supervision.”
Jordan tapped his tablet screen, bringing up a live network diagnostic chart.
“The board audit committee is scheduled to convene in twenty minutes,” Jordan reminded her, his tone turning serious. “If Evan manages to intercept the physical ledgers before we present them to the foundation president, he’ll shred the transaction histories and claim it was a clerical error.”
Mara picked up the leather folder, her fingers tightening resolutely around the clasp.
“He won’t get the chance,” Mara said, her eyes reflecting a cold, unyielding resolve. “We’re walking into that boardroom through the main entrance, and we’re laying out every single forged signature before the foundation president even sits down.”
