The Architects of Silence
Chapter 7 - The Federal Injunction
The tires of Detective Miller’s cruiser kicked up gravel as we sped away from the Rockford facility, the heavy iron gates vanishing behind us in the rearview mirror.
Clara sat in the back seat between Jordan and me, wrapped in a heavy thermal blanket, her breathing steadying as the miles ticked away toward Chicago.
My phone buzzed relentlessly in my coat pocket—a barrage of unknown numbers, blocked caller IDs, and automated legal notifications from federal bankruptcy and family courts.
I pulled the phone out and answered a call from Howard Vance, our family attorney, whose voice was tight with frantic urgency.
""Nathan, where are you?"" Howard shouted over the line, the sound of slamming courtroom doors echoing in the background. ""Adrian’s attorneys just appeared before Federal Judge Sterling with an emergency injunction seizing all family assets and claiming Clara was legally declared incompetent five years ago!""
""It's a forged guardianship ruling,"" I said, gripping the phone tightly. ""We have Clara in the car, and we have Detective Miller's state inspection report proving the institutional confinement was entirely fraudulent.""
""It doesn't matter what you have in the car if you don't reach the federal courthouse in downtown Chicago before the ten o'clock injunction hearing,"" Howard warned. ""Judge Sterling is prepared to sign a permanent custody award transferring Lily directly to Adrian's corporate custody trustee within the hour.""
As if on cue, a heavy black SUV pulled out from a side road half a mile behind us, its headlights flashing in broad daylight as it accelerated rapidly to close the distance between our vehicles.
""We've got a tail,"" Miller announced sharply, checking her side mirror as she gripped the steering wheel. ""Two unmarked units matching federal marshals' profiles are pacing us from the left lane.""
