The Architects of Silence

Chapter 4 - The Vanished Mother

Chapter 4 illustration

The interrogation room at the Lake Forest precinct smelled of stale bleach and damp wool.

Detective Sarah Miller slammed a thick manila folder onto the stainless-steel table, her face flushed with suppressed anger.

""The internal affairs ping confirmed the data leak,"" Miller said, looking between Jordan and me. ""The live feed of our tactical approach was routed through an encrypted VPN proxy linked directly to a mobile terminal belonging to Lieutenant Greg Vance—head of the department's domestic crimes division and a cousin to your brother.""

I sat with my elbows resting on my knees, staring at the scarred metal surface of the table.

""Everything is tied to the family name,"" I muttered, rubbing my temples. ""Adrian didn't build this conspiracy alone. He has a municipal shield protecting every move he makes.""

Jordan slid his laptop forward, pointing to a newly decrypted file recovered from Adrian’s local storage array before the remote wipe could finish.

""There's something else,"" Jordan said quietly. ""When we decrypted the historical family records, we didn't just find forged birth certificates for Lily. We found the digital audit trail for Rebecca's sister, Clara—Lily’s biological mother.""

My head snapped up.

""Clara? Adrian always told the family she abandoned them and moved to Europe five years ago.""

""She never left the state,"" Jordan said, tapping the screen to reveal a series of bank statements and institutional transfer records. ""Five years ago, Clara tried to file domestic abuse charges against Adrian through a local clinic. Within forty-eight hours, her bank accounts were frozen, her medical license was revoked under a fabricated disciplinary board review, and she was committed to a private psychiatric facility in Rockford under an assumed name.""

The cold reality of the conspiracy settled over the room like an anchor.

Adrian hadn't just abused a child; he had systematically erased an entire human being to protect his corporate reputation, using the very legal machinery meant to protect citizens.

Miller leaned against the doorframe, her expression grim.

""If Clara is still alive inside that facility,"" Miller said, ""she’s the only living witness who can legally invalidate Adrian's guardianship claims and expose the forged birth records before the morning custody hearing.""
