The Architects of Silence
Chapter 3 - The Ghost in the System
Miller’s hand dropped instantly toward her holster, her badge flashing in the dim ambient light from the hallway.
""Adrian Vance, step away from the doorway and keep your hands where I can see them,"" Miller commanded, her voice cutting through the kitchen like steel. ""You are being served with an emergency protective custody order signed by Magistrate Vance.""
Adrian didn't flinch.
He took a slow sip of his coffee, his eyes fixing on me with a cold, analytical amusement.
""You think a magistrate's order signed at three in the morning holds any weight when the underlying jurisdictional data has already been updated?"" Adrian asked smoothly, setting his mug down on the marble counter.
Jordan stepped past Miller, pulling his laptop from his tactical satchel and slamming it onto the counter beside Adrian’s mug.
""What are you talking about, Adrian?"" Jordan snapped, opening the terminal interface.
""I'm talking about the fact that Lily isn't even registered as a resident of this county as of two hours ago,"" Adrian replied, his smile widening just enough to reveal the tension underneath. ""Her birth certificate, medical files, and guardianship filings were legally transferred to a private trust domiciled in Delaware under an emergency family relocation act.""
I pushed past Miller and grabbed Adrian by the collar of his sweater, slamming him back against the pantry door.
""Where is she, Adrian?"" I growled, my knuckles whitening. ""Where is my niece?""
Before Adrian could answer, the screen on Jordan’s laptop flashed violently, red warning text scrolling across the terminal interface as a localized network ping traced an outgoing data transmission from the house to an IP address registered in downtown Chicago.
""Someone's wiping our server connection from inside this room,"" Jordan gasped, typing frantically to intercept the command. ""The warrant details... our exact GPS coordinates... they're being broadcast in real time to an external feed.""
Miller’s eyes widened as she scanned the kitchen corners, her gaze locking onto a tiny, pinhole camera lens embedded in the decorative smoke detector directly above our heads.
""It's not just a smart home hub,"" Miller whispered, pulling her radio free from her shoulder mount. ""This entire house is a localized surveillance loop—and someone inside the department has been feeding Adrian our operational schedule since midnight.""
