My Ex-Husband Sued To Seize My $15M Trust—Until Page 88 Proved He Was Never Legally Married To Me!

Chapter 5 - The Handcuffs On The Flagstones

Chapter 5 illustration

The iron gates groaned open under automated override.

Two marked cruisers from the State Police Special Investigations Unit rolled up the winding driveway, their red and blue strobe lights flashing violently against the manicured hedges.

Behind them drove an ordinary yellow taxi.

Out of the lead cruiser stepped Investigator Reynolds, carrying an unsealed arrest warrant bearing the gold seal of the State Attorney General.

"Julian Vance?" Reynolds called out, descending upon the terrace with three armed troopers flanking him.

Julian remained on his knees, his expensive rented trousers soaked with mud and spilled coffee.

"Officer," Sterling squeaked, raising both hands into the air immediately. "I am merely retained civil counsel. I had no prior knowledge of any fraudulent marital instruments."

"Save it, counselor," Reynolds snapped. "We're not here for the trust dispute."

Reynolds stepped directly in front of Julian, pulling a set of heavy steel cuffs from his tactical belt.

"Julian Vance, you are under arrest for first-degree felony bigamy, identity fraud, and filing false instruments with the Department of State."

"Wait!" a shrill, hysterical scream cut through the morning air.

The yellow taxi had stopped behind the cruisers.

Out tumbled Eleanor Vance, wearing an oversized faux-fur coat and oversized sunglasses, dragging a matching set of floral luggage into the gravel.

"Julian! What is happening?!" Eleanor shrieked, running toward the stairs in her orthopedic slip-ons. "Claire! You monstrous harlot! Tell these men to let my son go! We came here to move into our suite!"

Reynolds didn't even look back. He grabbed Julian by the collar, hauled him to his feet, and clicked the ratchets shut around his wrists with a heavy metallic crunch.

"Mom... shut up," Julian wept, tears streaming down his face as he choked on his own words. "Shut your mouth."

"He didn't do anything!" Eleanor wailed, grabbing Reynolds's sleeve. "He is the master of this estate! His name is Vance!"

"Ma'am, step back immediately," a second trooper commanded, physically separating Eleanor from the arresting officer. "Your son has a warrant for multiple counts of perjury and systemic bank fraud."

"Claire!" Eleanor turned toward me, falling to her knees on the terrace steps, clawing at the limestone edges. "Claire, please! Have mercy! He is your husband!"

"I am an unmarried woman, Eleanor," I said, looking down at her from the landing. "According to the Supreme Court of this state, your son was nothing more than an unauthorized, fraudulent tenant."

Julian was marched down the limestone stairs, his head hanging low, shoved into the caged backseat of the state cruiser.

The door slammed shut with an echoing, absolute thud.

Investigator Reynolds tipped his hat toward me. "Thank you for the digital files, Ms. Montgomery. The state grand jury convenes on Tuesday."

The cruisers pulled away down the gravel road, leaving Eleanor weeping hysterically over her floral suitcases in the driveway while Arthur Sterling frantically shoved his papers back into his briefcase, running toward his car without saying another word.

I took a deep, clean breath of the morning air, watching the gate slowly swing closed behind them.

Marcus walked back to my table, picking up the soaked legal packet and tossing it into the copper fire pit near the wall.

Then, his smartwatch emitted a high-frequency, double-tone ping that made his jaw lock.
