Chapter 5 - The Claws Retract
The encrypted app chimed with three sharp pings.
Carter tapped the screen, and I watched the final remnants of his composure shatter.
It was a copy of the emergency board resolution drafted by Brenda Vance forty minutes earlier:
BY UNANIMOUS CONSENT OF CLASS A CONTROLLING INTEREST, CARTER VANCE IS REMOVED AS MANAGING DIRECTOR AND CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY.
Below the text was the official electronic verification stamp, authorized by the voting proxy that had automatically migrated to my name at 11:45 p.m.
"You took the board," Carter whispered, his voice trembling so violently he could barely hold the phone. "How did you get the outside directors to sign at midnight?"
"The outside directors don't care about your personal life, Carter," I replied, folding my arms across my chest. "They care about debt covenants. When I showed them the eighty-four thousand dollars in fraudulent travel vouchers you billed to the expansion fund, they signed the removal resolution in three minutes to protect themselves from shareholder derivative lawsuits."
Carter dropped his hands to his sides, the phone slipping from his grip and bouncing onto the porch runner.
"Deputy," Brenda Vance said, turning to Sergeant Harris. "Please escort Mr. Vance inside to collect one change of clothes, his personal identification, and his medication. All corporate hardware, corporate vehicle keys, and commercial credit instruments must remain on the premises."
"Wait!" Carter gasped, his voice cracking like dry wood. "Where am I supposed to sleep? It's one in the morning!"
"There’s an extended-stay motel out by the interstate," I said, meeting his bloodshot eyes without a shred of pity. "It's forty-five dollars a night. I’m sure you have enough cash in your wallet to cover the deposit."
Sergeant Harris placed a heavy, gloved hand on Carter's shoulder, steering him back toward the open doorway.
"Move along, Mr. Vance. You have ten minutes."
Chloe watched from the driveway, sobbing silently as she climbed back into her Mercedes, the realization finally settling in that the billionaire executive who had promised her Manhattan penthouses was about to be put out on the curb with a gym bag.
She put the car in reverse, tires spitting gravel as she sped away through the broken security gate, vanishing into the rainy dark without waiting for him.
Ten minutes later, Carter emerged from the house carrying an old canvas duffel bag, his shoulders hunched against the cold drizzle.
He stopped at the edge of the porch, looking back at me standing beneath the warm light of the chandelier.
"You think you won, Sarah?" he muttered, venom leaking through his exhaustion. "You took the firm, but you don't know the half of it. You have no idea what's coming on Monday morning."
"The audit begins at eight, Carter," I said. "Whatever is coming, I have the ledger."
The deputy escorted him down the stairs and into the back of an ordinary yellow cab that Brenda had called for him from town.
The taxi rolled down the driveway, its red taillights fading into the thick mist.
I turned back toward the foyer, the quiet of the grand house settling around me like a deep, cleansing breath.
Brenda stood by the hall table, her phone pressed against her ear, listening intently to someone on the other end.
When she lowered the receiver, the professional satisfaction on her face was completely gone, replaced by a dark, severe tension that made my spine go rigid.
