Chapter 2 - The Ambush at the Gate
The intercom display on the credenza blinked with a flashing red light.
Carter spun around, staring at the small digital monitor like it was a live wire.
On the screen, two black Ford Explorers sat idling at the entrance of our five-acre estate, their high beams piercing through the dense midnight mist.
"Who is that?" Carter demanded, whirling back on me, his eyes wide and bloodshot. "Did you call the police? Because you caught me having a drink in the cottage?!"
"Infidelity isn't a criminal matter, Carter," I said, rising smoothly to my feet. "Civil enforcement, however, is very real."
He ignored me, lunging toward the credenza and slapping the intercom button.
"This is private property!" he shouted into the small brass grill. "Identify yourselves or I’m releasing the guard dogs!"
A crisp, metallic voice boomed back through the speaker with mechanical indifference:
"Mr. Vance, this is Sergeant Harris with the New Castle County Sheriff’s Department. We have a certified Writ of Immediate Attachment and a Temporary Restraining Order issued by Chancellor Evelyn Sterling. Open the gate, or we will breach the access arm."
Carter’s fingers slipped from the button as if the brass had burned his skin.
"Restraining order?" he stammered, turning around to face me, his chest heaving under his tailored linen shirt. "On what grounds?! I haven't touched you!"
"Financial dissipation and unauthorized transfer of commingled trust capital," I said, stepping around the desk toward him. "Section 12 of the Chancery Code allows for emergency protective orders when an officer of the firm is actively siphoning funds during a domestic dispute."
"I didn't siphon a single dollar!"
"You wired one hundred and twenty thousand dollars from the corporate marketing reserve to an offshore LLC in Belize three days ago, Carter," I said, my voice deadpan.
Carter froze completely.
"The entity is called Azure Horizon Holdings," I continued, holding his gaze until he looked away. "Registered under Chloe Miller's mother's maiden name. Did you really think our forensic accountants wouldn't catch a six-figure wire during routine quarterly reconciliation?"
"That was... that was an independent consulting retainer!" he lied, his words stumbling over one another.
"For a twenty-four-year-old who started as your executive assistant six months ago?"
Outside, a heavy hydraulic crunch resonated through the front lawn as the sheriff's vehicle pushed through the locked iron gates.
