The Disinherited Daughter Stood On The Balcony—Until Her Federal Seizure Locked The Ballroom Doors At 9 AM!
Chapter 1 - The Iron Gate Interception
Thomas barely reached for the iron master lever before the high-pitched chirp of a police siren sliced through the morning sea mist.
Two black Ford Expeditions bearing the gold seal of the Rhode Island State Police cut across the cobblestone apron, blocking the wrought-iron driveway of Cliffside Manor.
Out stepped Senior Investigator Ray Vance, flanked by a uniformed lieutenant and a portly man in a three-piece suit holding a burgundy legal folio.
"Turn off the engine, Miss Mercer," Investigator Vance commanded, walking up to my driver's window and tapping his shield against the door frame.
Behind him emerged Carter Mercer—my father’s estranged younger brother and the chairman of the family trust's audit oversight board.
He adjusted his wire-rimmed glasses, a predatory sneer twisting his thin lips.
"Did you really think a forged midnight deed transfer would survive the sunrise, Victoria?" Carter asked, his voice smooth with practiced venom.
Thomas took half a step forward from the gatehouse, his hand resting on his radio. "Investigator, this property belongs to Miss Montgomery-Mercer. The closing documents cleared Sotheby’s at nine o'clock last night."
"The auction at Sotheby’s has been formally stayed under emergency judicial review," Carter interrupted, pulling a red-ribboned filing from his leather briefcase.
He thrust the parchment through my open window, hovering it three inches from my face.
"Emergency petition for probate asset sequestration," Carter announced with cold satisfaction. "Signed by Judge Harrison at seven-thirty this morning."
I looked down at the paper, then directly into Carter's bloodshot eyes.
"Judge Harrison recused himself from all Mercer estate proceedings six weeks ago, Carter," I said, my voice dead level.
"Not from administrative jurisdictional challenges, my dear niece," Carter countered, his smirk broadening. "Your father’s original 1989 charter explicitly named me as the sole surviving managing trustee in the event of cognitive incapacity."
He tapped the stone gatepost with the tip of his umbrella.
"You have ten minutes to turn this vehicle around and surrender the physical keys to this manor, Victoria. Otherwise, Investigator Vance will impound the car and take you into custody for criminal trespass."
I didn't reach for the keys.
Instead, my encrypted satellite phone on the console screen buzzed with an incoming priority alert from the Newport Land Registry.
