The Disinherited Daughter Stood On The Balcony—Until Her Federal Seizure Locked The Ballroom Doors At 9 AM!
Chapter 4 - The Offshore Margin Call
Thomas picked up the heavy brass receiver inside the stone gatehouse, listened for three seconds, and brought the handset to the open window.
"Miss Victoria," Thomas said, his voice completely steady. "It's the Managing Director of Barclays International Private Wealth in London."
I stepped over to the gatehouse window and took the receiver.
"Victoria Mercer speaking."
"Miss Mercer," a clipped British accent came over the line, crisp and formal. "We have received the certified copy of the First Circuit Appellate Mandate and the accompanying federal attachment order."
"Has the Mercer Syndicate line been liquidated?" I asked.
"Completely," the director replied. "The cross-collateralized borrowing facility of sixty million dollars has been formally accelerated. Because Carter Mercer’s signature on the underlying debt guarantee has been declared fraudulent, his personal investment accounts have been seized to cover the deficiency."
I held the receiver away from my ear, turning it directly toward Carter, who was still kneeling in the dirt.
"Did you hear that, Carter?" I asked.
Carter slowly shook his head, his face the shade of wet paper. "No... no, they can't touch my personal liquid accounts. The trust shielded my offshore holdings!"
"Your trust was funded with stolen corporate dividend streams," Marshal Miller stated, stepping forward with the cuffs ready. "Under federal law, that pierces the corporate veil completely."
Carter scrambled to his feet, grabbing the wrought-iron gate bars with trembling fingers.
"Victoria! We can settle this right now!" Carter pleaded, his aristocratic pride dissolving into a frantic whine. "I’ll sign over my voting shares in the land syndicate! I’ll release all claims to Cliffside Manor! Just call off the federal filing!"
"You don't have any voting shares to sign over, Carter," I said, taking out my fountain pen and signing the delivery receipt Marshal Miller offered. "The court voided your equity forty-five minutes ago."
The two state police troopers stepped in, flanking Carter on either side.
"Carter Mercer," Investigator Vance announced, his voice flat and clinical. "You are being placed under arrest for felony fraud, filing false instruments with the county registry, and grand larceny."
Click. Snap.
The metallic bite of the cuffs locking around Carter’s wrists echoed across the morning sea cliffs.
Carter bowed his head in total defeat, his expensive umbrella lying forgotten in the puddle by his boots as the troopers guided him into the back of the patrol vehicle.
As the squad car door slammed shut, the heavy iron gates of Cliffside Manor swung inward with a smooth, silent glide.
Thomas tipped his hat toward me, a wide, genuine smile spreading across his weathered face.
"The drive is clear, Miss Victoria," Thomas said. "Welcome home."
I climbed back into my car, the leather seat comfortable and quiet as I shifted into gear.
Just as my tires rolled across the cobblestone threshold, the private satellite phone on my dash emitted an urgent, high-frequency encrypted warble.
