Chapter 4 - The Cottage Collapse
Chloe Miller leaped out of the driver’s seat without killing the headlights.
She was wearing an oversized cashmere coat thrown carelessly over silk pajama bottoms, her high heels catching in the muddy grass as she ran toward the front porch.
"Carter!" she shrieked, ignoring the uniformed deputies completely. "What is happening? The corporate card was declined at the Shell station, and my private portal login has been revoked!"
Carter closed his eyes, his shoulders sagging in absolute humiliation.
"Chloe, go back to the car," he hissed between his teeth. "Get out of here right now."
"I can't go back!" she yelled, stumbling up the stone steps. "Two men in suits just showed up at the guest cottage! They're locking the doors with yellow tape and telling me I have fifteen minutes to vacate the guest quarters!"
Brenda Vance adjusted her spectacles, looking down at the young woman with clinical detachment.
"Miss Miller, the guest cottage is an auxiliary asset of Vance Estate Properties LLC," Brenda stated. "Under the terms of the emergency receivership, non-resident occupants are classified as unauthorized licensees. Your personal items are currently being inventoried by bonded court bailiffs."
"You can't touch my things!" Chloe screamed, her face contorting with panic. "I have designer luggage in that room! Carter bought it for me!"
"Carter bought it using the operational expense account of Vance Capital," I said, stepping past Sergeant Harris to look down at her. "Which means it constitutes commingled corporate inventory pending forensic review."
Chloe looked up at me, the defiant arrogance she had displayed around the corporate offices over the last six months instantly disintegrating.
"Sarah... please," she stammered, clutching the lapels of her coat. "I was just doing what Carter asked. He said the marriage was over. He said you were signing an uncontested waiver next week!"
"Carter lied to you, Chloe," I said smoothly. "Just like he lied to our investors, our board, and his wife."
Sergeant Harris took a half-step forward, his voice firm and commanding.
"Miss Miller, step away from the entrance. If you do not clear the front driveway immediately, I will cite you for interfering with court officers during the execution of a judicial writ."
Chloe backed down the steps, her heels wobbling, looking desperately at Carter for protection.
Carter didn't look at her. He kept his eyes glued to the floorboards of the porch, looking entirely hollowed out.
"Carter?" she cried, her voice cracking into a desperate whine. "Say something! Tell them who you are!"
Carter said nothing.
He was staring at his phone, which had begun flashing an alert from his personal encrypted messaging application.
